Cedric Brown, a 2003 AIRspace artist-in-resident, returns to the Jon Sims Center for the Arts with two readings of a work-in-progress, Pinguero’ed. “Pinguero” is a slang term for a Cuban male hustler. Set in Havana, Pinguero’ed looks at how desire, economics, and politics play out in the relationship between two Black gay men, a Cuban and an American. Pinguero’ed explores the fine line between help and exploitation, between mutual desire and mutual benefit. Can love be genuine when money is involved?
Cedric Brown is a Bay Area writer and performer. He was the vocalist for the 1150 Trio and Cleo Blue bands, has appeared several times in the Afro Solo Festival, and received positive reviews for his performance in “For Colored Boys” at Theater Rhinoceros. As an AIRspace artist he created “I Swing Like That,” a musical exploration of jazz and identity, an excerpt of which he presented at Yerba Buena Center. Cedric participated in last year’s Alternative Theatre Institute at Intersection for the Arts, and was featured as the narrator and vocalist in the 2005 premiere of "The President's Daughter" by Robert Moses' Kin dance company. He released a self-published chapbook, “the path to here,” this spring.
