Jon Sims Center for the Arts [JSC] located in the heart of SOMA with an extensive client base in the Castro, Noe Valley and Mission District neighborhoods, is a 501c3, queer-identified multidisciplinary performing arts center and service organization. JSC has ensured access to the creative process, providing resources that support and promote new and existing arts programs for over 25 years! We believe that the process and product of creative activity have equal value, that all talent is worthy of development, and that artistic expression is essential to our communities' health. As a non-profit agency, JSC relies upon numerous grants and foundations such as The San Francisco Foundation, Grants for the Arts, Walter & Elise Haas Fund and the SF Arts Commission Cultural Equity Initiatives. Many of these foundations are reducing their grants programs due to budget cuts, as such JSC is struggling financially.

Resident Programs

· AIRspace (Artists-In-Residence) program: Eight artists or artist groups are selected each year for a five-month residency for the development of new performance work. The final three months of each residency involve showings of works-in-progress with facilitated post-performance discussions. In addition to providing cutting-edge artistic programming, the residency enables emerging artists to further professionalize their artistic careers.

· LIT @ JSC: This bi-monthly literary reading series is the first queer-identified literary series in a non-commercial setting offered in the Bay Area. The program features diverse poets and writers, often pairing more established artists with emerging artists for evenings of readings that include post-performance discussions, receptions, and book signings.

· JSC/Alchemy Emerging Playwrights Series: Through an open submission process, plays are selected for workshop productions that pair playwrights with directors for the initial development of new work. JSC produces three plays per year, each with a six evening run. Producers at main stage theaters are invited to preview new work that serves to advance the artistic career of the playwright.

· SFinX (San Francisco in Exile) Live at JSC: This exciting and innovative program is a bi-monthly spoken word performance series with a companion Website archive. This grassroots community based program rotates curatorial responsibilities and features artists most at risk of exile from San Francisco's pricey real estate market. Performances are audio recorded and files are posted on the SFinX Website to serve as an archive and to promote individual artists.

· JSCinema: This is a new collaborative film and video exhibition program by and for the LGBTQ communities in the Bay Area. JSCinema selects videos and films through an open submission process. JSCinema meets every third Sunday of the Month, at 6 p.m. at JSC. The admission fee is divided between JSC and the filmmakers. A Q&A session follows the screening of the films.

· Special Events: In addition to the five resident programs, JSC produces a variety of special events including performances by nationally recognized artists such as Holly Hughes, Carmelita Tropicana, Tim Miller and Split Britches. JSC also presents lectures by visiting scholars and a variety of panels that accompany performances during the National Queer Arts Festival and throughout the year.
